Our History
METRO Federal Credit Union was initially organized and chartered by municipal employees of Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect, Illinois in June 1973. At its inception, the credit union was known as Arlington Heights Governmental Employee Federal Credit Union.
It wasn’t until September of 1985 that the credit union received permission to change its name to METRO Federal Credit Union when it expanded beyond its initial sponsor to over 50 Sponsoring Employer Groups. Up until the beginning of 2019, METRO served the employees and families of approximately 60 public employers including municipalities (village, town, or city), public libraries, park districts, school districts, and related governmental organizations in Cook, Dupage, Kane, and Lake counties.
In 2019, METRO was granted a Community Charter by the National Credit Union Administration. METRO now serves the community in portions of Cook, DuPage, Lake, and McHenry Counties, including anyone who lives, works, volunteers, worships, or attends school within the boundaries of our community.
